“Nobody can know for sure they're going to Heaven. That would be presumption. I just try my best and hope in God's mercy.”

We share the same hope in God's mercy. But John wrote so that believers may know they have eternal life, because it rests on Christ's finished work, not on how well we have done.

💡 Ask them back“If your place in Heaven depends partly on how well you do, how would you ever know you had done enough? But if it rests entirely on what Jesus did on the cross, is anything left to be unsure about? John wrote, "that you may know that you have eternal life." What do you think he meant?”

“Faith alone? James says faith without works is dead, and that a man is justified by works and not by faith only. The only place the Bible says "faith only" is where it says not by faith only!”

Paul and James agree: we are saved by grace through faith, not by works, but saving faith is never alone; it always works. Paul explains how a sinner is made right with God; James shows how real faith proves itself.

💡 Ask them back“Abraham believed God and it was counted to him for righteousness in Genesis 15, but he offered Isaac years later in Genesis 22. Which one made him right with God? And if James is showing what real faith looks like, could he and Paul be answering two different questions?”

“Why don't you Protestants honour Mary? She's the Mother of God. And what's wrong with asking the saints to pray for me? You ask your friends to pray for you.”

We should honour Mary: Scripture calls her blessed, and she is a model of faith. But Scripture never tells us to pray to departed saints. It gives us direct access to the Father through Jesus, the one Mediator, who always lives to intercede for us.

💡 Ask them back“I agree Mary is "blessed among women." Can I ask what she herself told people to do? At Cana she pointed away from herself: "Whatever He says to you, do it." If Jesus invites us to come straight to the Father in His name, why go through anyone else?”

“Nobody is good enough to walk straight into Heaven. I'll need to be purified in Purgatory first, and I pray for my family who have died.”

You're right that nothing unclean enters Heaven. But Jesus has already done the purifying: He "by Himself purged our sins," and His blood "cleanses us from all sin." For the believer, to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

💡 Ask them back“If the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin, what is left for Purgatory to purify? And when Jesus told the dying thief, "Today you will be with Me in Paradise," how much purifying did that man still need?”

“The Bible came from the Church. The Catholic Church decided which books belong in it, so you need the Church's Tradition and the Pope to interpret it. Jesus built His Church on Peter, not on a book.”

The Church recognised the books God inspired; it didn't give them their authority. Tradition and church leaders matter, but Jesus held every tradition accountable to the written Word, and Scripture alone is the final, God-breathed standard.

💡 Ask them back“Israel recognised the books of the Old Testament long before the Church existed. Did that make Israel's leaders infallible? And when Jesus corrected the religious leaders of His day, did He appeal to their tradition or to what is written?”
