The 30-second answer

Don't defend it—grieve it and say you are sorry. Then gently separate the Messiah from those who used His name: Yeshua was a Jew, His apostles were Jews, and He commanded love, not hatred. Those who persecuted Jews disobeyed Him.

💡 Ask them back“You're right to be angry, and I'm sorry for what was done to your people in Jesus' name. May I ask one question? If Yeshua was a Jewish teacher who told His followers to love even their enemies, were the people who burned synagogues following Him—or betraying Him?”

⚠️ What not to sayNever say "the Jews killed Jesus"—Scripture says Jewish leaders and Gentile Romans were both involved, and He laid down His life for all of us. Don't say "those weren't real Christians" as a quick escape; many were church leaders. Don't say Jewish suffering was God's punishment.

Own the History—Without Excuses:
Crusaders massacred Jewish communities in the Rhineland in 1096. The blood libel (from Norwich in 1144) spread lies that led to murders. Jews were expelled from England (1290) and Spain (1492), forced to wear special dress, and killed in pogroms. Martin Luther wrote On the Jews and Their Lies (1543). Centuries of "Christ-killer" preaching prepared the soil in which the Nazis' racial hatred grew. A Jewish friend knows this history better than you. Say: "I'm sorry. It was evil, and it was done in the name of Someone who would have condemned it."

Jesus and His Apostles Were Jewish:
Yeshua was circumcised on the eighth day, taught in synagogues, kept the feasts, and was called "Rabbi". Every apostle was Jewish. Paul said he had "great sorrow and continual grief" for his people and could wish himself accursed for their sake (Romans 9:2-3). The New Testament says "salvation is of the Jews" (John 4:22). Hatred of Jews contradicts the Messiah Himself.

"Christ-Killer" Is a Lie:
Jesus said, "No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself" (John 10:18). The apostles said Herod, Pontius Pilate, the Gentiles and the people of Israel were all gathered against Him (Acts 4:27)—and Isaiah 53:6 says "the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all." My sins put Him on the cross. The Catholic Church formally rejected the charge of collective Jewish guilt in 1965 (Nostra Aetate), and many Protestant bodies have repented of antisemitism.

Paul Warned Gentile Christians Against Arrogance:
Romans 11 tells Gentile believers they are wild branches grafted into Israel's olive tree: "do not boast against the branches... the root supports you" (11:18). Paul asks, "Has God cast away His people? Certainly not!" (11:1). Christians who hated Jews ignored the plain words of the book they claimed to follow.

Some Christians Did Stand With Jews:
Corrie ten Boom's family hid Jews in their home in Haarlem, and the Protestant village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon sheltered many Jews, especially children. Both are honoured by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations. Mention this humbly—it does not cancel the rest. The real question is not whether Christians have failed, but who Yeshua is.

They say“Your New Testament is where it starts. John has Jesus call "the Jews" children of the devil (John 8:44).”

You can sayI understand why that verse hurts, and it has been abused terribly. But it is an argument among Jews: Jesus, John and the disciples were all Jewish, speaking the way the prophets did—Isaiah called his own nation "a people laden with iniquity" (Isaiah 1:4). It was never a verdict on a race. When Gentile Christians later turned it into one, they twisted it.

They say“After the Holocaust, trying to convert Jews is just finishing Hitler's work by other means.”

You can sayI hear the pain in that, and I would never want to erase your people. Hitler hated Jews for their blood—even Jews who had been baptised. I'm not asking you to stop being Jewish. I'm sharing what the first Jewish followers of Yeshua believed: that He is Israel's Messiah. You are completely free to say no, and I'll still respect you.

They say“If your faith were true, it would have made Christians better people. Instead it made them murderers.”

You can sayWhere people used Jesus' name to gain power, they did horrible things—no argument. But the same Gospel also moved people like Corrie ten Boom to risk their lives for Jewish neighbours. Judge Yeshua by His own words and life, not by those who disobeyed Him. Would you be willing to read one Gospel, as a Jewish book about a Jewish rabbi?

🕊️ Pentecostal key — the Spirit on the streetBefore any argument, let the Holy Spirit give you genuine sorrow—not a technique. Listen to their family's story. If they are open to it, ask permission to pray the priestly blessing over them and their family: "The LORD bless you and keep you" (Numbers 6:24-26). If they decline, thank them and leave the door open. Love that has no hidden agenda speaks louder than proof-texts (Romans 10:1).
