The 30-second answer

Where we grew up explains how we first heard an idea, not whether it is true—and the same logic applies to the skeptic's own views. Christianity was not born in the West, and faith in Christ cannot be inherited: every person must investigate and decide.

💡 Ask them back“That's true of a lot of beliefs—maybe yours too. If you'd been raised in a devout family in another country, you might not be a skeptic. Would that make your view false? So how could we find out which belief is actually true, whatever country we were born in?”

⚠️ What not to sayDon't deny that upbringing shapes belief—it obviously does. And don't treat other faiths as silly; many Hindus and Muslims are devout, thoughtful people. Don't claim you have studied every religion if you haven't.

Origin Isn't Truth:
How someone came to a belief doesn't settle whether it is true (the genetic fallacy). A child raised by doctors may believe germs cause disease because of her upbringing—and she is still right. Upbringing explains exposure; evidence decides truth.

It Cuts Both Ways:
Unbelief is shaped by culture too. Someone raised in a very secular city is more likely to be secular. If geography disproves belief, it disproves unbelief just as well—so the argument cancels itself out.

Christianity Isn't a "Western" Religion:
Jesus was a Jew from the Middle East. The Gospel went first to Jews and Samaritans, then to an Ethiopian official (Acts 8:26-39) and a Roman soldier (Acts 10). Today most of the world's Christians live in Africa, Latin America and Asia, and in many places people come to Christ against their family and culture, at real personal cost—the opposite of simply inheriting a religion.

Faith Cannot Be Inherited:
Scripture itself rejects "born into it" faith. God's children are those "who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God" (John 1:13), and Jesus told a lifelong religious teacher, "unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God" (John 3:3). Many people raised in church are not Christians at all.

Investigate, Don't Inherit:
The Bereans were commended because they "searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so" (Acts 17:11). Christianity rests on a public, checkable claim—Jesus' death and resurrection—and God "is not far from each one of us" (Acts 17:27). Invite them to read a Gospel for themselves.

They say“But most people just end up believing whatever their parents believed. That shows religion is just culture.”

You can sayMany do—and that's a challenge for Christians too; Jesus said each of us must be born again, not just born into a church family (John 3:3). But a pattern in how beliefs spread doesn't tell us which belief is true. People inherit their politics as well, yet some political claims are still true and others false. The only way to know is to look at the evidence.

They say“Every religion says it's the true one. How could you ever know which one is right?”

You can sayBy testing the claims that can be tested. Christianity rests on a public event—Jesus' death and resurrection in first-century Jerusalem—reported by named witnesses. Paul said if it didn't happen, our faith is futile (1 Corinthians 15:17). That's a good place to start. Would you be willing to read one Gospel, Luke or John, and weigh it for yourself?

They say“You only say that because you've never seriously looked at other religions.”

You can sayThat's a fair challenge, and I want to be honest about what I know and what I don't. What I can tell you is why I trust Jesus in particular: He didn't just point to a path—He claimed to be the way (John 14:6) and backed that claim by rising from the dead. Have you looked into another faith? I'd genuinely like to hear what you found.
