Jesus spoke about eternal judgment and hell more often than anyone else in the Bible.
💡 Ask them back“In Luke 16:19-31, Jesus told the story of the rich man and Lazarus. Was the rich man in the grave unconscious, or was he fully conscious, in torment, remembering his brothers, and speaking? Would Jesus build a story on something that isn't true?”
⚠️ What not to sayDon't exhibit delight or callousness about hell. Hell is a heartbreaking reality of eternal separation from God's goodness.

Jesus Taught Conscious Eternal Punishment:
- Matthew 25:46: "And these will go away into EVERLASTING PUNISHMENT, but the righteous into ETERNAL LIFE." (Notice: the same Greek word, aiōnios, stands behind both "everlasting" and "eternal"! If the punishment is temporary, eternal life is temporary too.)
- Mark 9:43-48: Jesus describes hell where "their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched."
The Rich Man and Lazarus (Luke 16):
The rich man is conscious, feels agony in the flame, recognizes Abraham, has memory of his earthly life, and begs for his brothers to be warned. This directly contradicts the Watchtower doctrine of soul sleep / annihilation.
Revelation 20:10:
"The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented DAY AND NIGHT FOREVER AND EVER."

You can sayJesus puts the two destinies side by side with the same word: eternal punishment and eternal life. Life is consciously experienced forever; so is the punishment. And Revelation 20:10 says the devil, the beast, and the false prophet are "tormented day and night forever and ever." You cannot be tormented forever if you no longer exist.
They say“Ecclesiastes 9:5 says "the dead know nothing."”
You can saySolomon is speaking of life "under the sun" (9:6)—from an earthly viewpoint the dead know nothing of what happens here and have no more share in it. The New Testament gives the fuller picture: to be "absent from the body" is to be "present with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:8), and the souls of the martyrs cry out to God before His throne (Revelation 6:9-10).
They say“The rich man and Lazarus is a parable. You can't build doctrine on a story full of symbols.”
You can sayEven if it is a parable, Jesus' parables use real-life realities—farmers, weddings, fathers and sons—to teach truth. He never built a story on something false, and this one even names Abraham and Lazarus. If the dead are simply unconscious, Jesus would be teaching a falsehood about the afterlife in order to make His point.
