Some leaders have exploited people for money, and Scripture condemns them in the strongest terms. But Jesus doesn't want your money—He wants you, and salvation is a free gift that can never be bought.

💡 Ask them back“If I could show you that Jesus offers forgiveness completely free—no payment, no membership fee—would you be open to hearing about Him? And is it fair to judge Jesus by people who misuse His name to get rich?”

Agree Where They Are Right:
The Bible condemns greedy religious leaders more sharply than any critic does. Peter warned of false teachers: "By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words" (2 Peter 2:3). Paul warned about people "who suppose that godliness is a means of gain" (1 Timothy 6:5). Jesus drove the money changers out of the temple: "you have made it a 'den of thieves'" (Matthew 21:13).

Salvation Is Free:
"The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (Romans 6:23). God's invitation has always been "without money and without price" (Isaiah 55:1). When Simon the sorcerer tried to buy the Spirit's power, Peter answered, "Your money perish with you, because you thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money!" (Acts 8:20).

Look at Jesus and the Apostles:
Jesus "has nowhere to lay His head" (Matthew 8:20). Paul could say, "I have coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel" (Acts 20:33), and he often worked with his own hands so as not to be a burden (1 Thessalonians 2:9). Judge the faith by its Founder, not by those who profit from His name.

Most Churches Aren't Like That:
Most churches are small congregations with pastors of ordinary means, and many run food banks, recovery groups and help for people in crisis. The televangelist with a jet makes the news; the faithful pastor visiting the hospital does not.

Giving Is Worship, Not a Ticket:
Christians give freely and gladly—"God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7)—as a response to grace, never to earn it. No one has to pay anything to be forgiven. Point them to the free gift: Jesus paid it all on the Cross.

You can sayChurches have real costs—buildings, staff, helping the poor—and members give toward them, the way any group supports what it believes in. But no one has to pay anything to be saved, and a good church will welcome you even if you never give a cent. If a church ever pressures you, or promises God's blessing in exchange for a donation, that's a warning sign.

They say“Those TV preachers say if I sow a seed, God will make me rich. Isn't that your gospel?”

You can sayNo. Jesus said, "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses" (Luke 12:15). The Gospel isn't a get-rich scheme; it's forgiveness of sins through Jesus' death and resurrection. The greatest thing God offers you is Himself—and it's free.

They say“So what are you getting out of standing out here?”

You can sayHonestly? Nothing anyone pays me for. I'm here because someone once told me about Jesus and it changed my life, and I believe what He said is true. I'm not asking for money, a signature or a membership—just a few minutes of your time.
