🔬 Atheist / Skeptic
They say
“I can be good without God. Secular empathy and humanism are all we need for morality.”
The 30-second answer
The issue is not whether atheists can act morally, but whether objective moral values and duties can exist without a transcendent Lawgiver.
💡 Ask them back“I agree you can be a wonderful, moral person! But my question is: in a godless universe of blind atomic collisions, why is human kindness objectively GOOD, and why is murder objectively WRONG, rather than just subjective personal preference?”
⚠️ What not to sayDon't say "Atheists are all wicked and can't do good deeds." Many atheists are law-abiding, kind citizens.
📖 The full defense
Ontology vs. Epistemology:
- Epistemology (Knowing): An atheist can easily recognize good and evil because God wrote His law on human consciences (Romans 2:15).
- Ontology (Foundation): If God does not exist, objective moral values have no foundation. Morality becomes socio-biological herd instinct, like that of ants or wolves. As the philosopher of science Michael Ruse put it, on that view "morality is a biological adaptation no less than are hands and feet and teeth."
The Fatal Flaw of Relativism:
If morality is merely evolutionary adaptation, then when Adolf Hitler or Pol Pot slaughtered millions, they were not violating any transcendent objective law—they were merely expressing a different evolutionary strategy. You cannot say the Nazis were objectively evil without an objective moral standard that sits above human culture.
✝️ Scripture anchors (NKJV)
Romans 2:14-15“For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law... they show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness.”
Isaiah 5:20“Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness.”
🔁 If they push back…
The comeback you are most likely to hear next — and a reply that keeps the conversation moving toward Jesus.
They say“Euthyphro's dilemma: is something good because God commands it, or does God command it because it's good? Either goodness is arbitrary, or it's a standard above God.”
You can sayThere's a third option: goodness is grounded in God's own unchanging nature, and His commands flow from who He is. So goodness isn't arbitrary—God can't command cruelty for its own sake, because that contradicts His character—and it isn't a standard above Him either. God doesn't just follow the good; He is the good.
They say“We don't need God for morality. Morality is about human well-being: whatever increases flourishing is good, whatever causes suffering is bad.”
You can sayI agree that harming people is wrong. My question is why it's really wrong rather than just disliked. If we are accidental products of nature, why is human flourishing objectively the goal—rather than, say, the flourishing of the strongest? You can't get an "ought" from a mere "is." You're borrowing a moral law that only makes sense if there is a Moral Lawgiver.
