“How can a loving God send anyone to hell? That's not fair.”

The 30-second answer

Because God is good, He must be just—a judge who ignores crime is corrupt. Hell is the just penalty for sin against an infinitely holy God, yet God wants no one to perish and paid the penalty Himself at the Cross.

💡 Ask them back“If a judge let a man who had raped and murdered go free because 'the judge is loving,' would that judge be good or corrupt? So if God is good, must He punish evil? And if He does, where does that leave you and me?”
⚠️ What not to sayDon't speak about hell with coldness, anger, or glee, and don't reduce it to "God sends people there because He's angry." Never claim to know who is in hell. Speak with tears (Philippians 3:18).

Love Requires Justice (the Courtroom):
A good judge must punish crime; a judge who lets the guilty go free is not loving but corrupt. God's love and justice are not in conflict—they meet at the Cross, "that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus" (Romans 3:26).

The Seriousness of Sin:
The seriousness of a crime depends partly on whom it is committed against. Lying to a friend is wrong; lying under oath in court is more serious. Sin is rebellion against an infinitely holy and good God—"Against You, You only, have I sinned" (Psalm 51:4).

God Sends No One Unwillingly:
God is "not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9); He "desires all men to be saved" (1 Timothy 2:4); "I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked" (Ezekiel 33:11). Hell is ultimately people receiving what they chose—life without God (2 Thessalonians 1:9). C.S. Lewis wrote that the doors of hell are "locked on the inside," and that in the end there are those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, "Thy will be done."

The Cross Is God's Own Solution:
God didn't only warn us of the penalty; He paid it Himself. "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). No one has to go to hell.

You can sayWe don't measure punishment by how long a crime took—a murder can take seconds. We measure it by how serious it is and whom it is against, and sin is rebellion against an infinitely holy God. Scripture also gives no hint that people in hell stop rebelling. But here's the good news: you don't have to find out. Jesus took the penalty so you can go free.
They say“I could never love a God who would send people to hell.”
You can sayI understand—hell should horrify us. But look at it from the other side: God loved you enough to send His Son to bear the judgment we deserved on the Cross, so you wouldn't have to. The question isn't whether God is loving enough; it's whether we'll receive what His love has done.
They say“A loving father would never torture his children forever.”
You can sayHell isn't God tormenting His children for sport; it is the just sentence of the Judge, and ultimately the separation from God that people have chosen. Meanwhile God, as a loving Father, is pleading: "Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die?" (Ezekiel 33:11). Anyone can become His child through Jesus (John 1:12)—including you, today.
